FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – PVNRT PARK OPENS

(AP) Pittsburgh, PA

The start of the 2005 MLB season got underway in Pittsburgh this afternoon as the Pirates, managed by Tony Pena, took on division rival Brewers at the new home of the Buccos, PVNRT Park. Pirates pulled out to a 1-0 lead in the 6th with Tike Redman scoring the first ever run on a double by Miguel Cairo. Pirates went up 2-0 only to blow the lead in the 8th with the Brew Crew scoring twice. Bottom of the 9th almost ended in dramatic fashion as Jason Schmidt jacked one over the left field wall only to have the Brewers leftfielder climb up on the wall and reach over to snag it away. Jason was pulled after giving up 2 runs on 3 hits through 10 innings.

The Pirates wasted 4 chances with runners on 2nd and 3rd in OT as the game went into the 17th inning (yes 17). Both rosters were drained on reserves and even Kenny Lofton saw time for the Pirates at 3B (1 for 4, 1 error). The Brewers, lead by Pudge Rodrigez, piled on the hits deep into the corners of the park during the 17th and managed to shutdown the Pirates 1-2-3 in the last half of the inning to pull out a 4-2 win. Dimitri Young went 4-5 in a losing effort. Jason Bay, Vlad Guerrero were both intentionally walked twice and Matt Stairs once.
